6 There was a dangerous inclination within Mortimus, that which bade him to go see the Browswicks for one last time before departure. He recognized the whim and tried to strike the possibility of acting on it from his mind, but it was to no avail. He was already close to the cottage and was already imagining words he might speak to both, but especially words he might share with Ether. Yeah, I was kinda hoping we both got through with the 2nd wind. They were both good stories and as neither of us killed the other it would made sense as well :1

That's absolutely true.
But then, with their stipulation that the character is either a step closer to remnant or revenant, it also might have been easier to chose someone canonically "killed" or "defeated" in the traditional sense.
